TwistCabbage Chanko Nabe was probably the most memorable meal in a long list of memorable meals I had over there.

Chuu Luckily Chanko is making its way over to the west slowly. Some higher end local Ramen places sometimes have it on their rotating monthly special and there is a Japanese restaurant known for it locally.

eetsumkaus it's because nabe is homecooked food. It's like asking why tourists don't eat more tonjiru. There just aren't a whole lot of restaurants that serve it. Unless there are specialty ones like sukiyaki, and of those, the only ones I can think of that are underrated is motsunabe. That is only because Westerners rarely eat offal, but Asian tourists actually love that shit.

A_Possum_Named_Steve Reminder that Mexicans are westerners and we eat the fuck out of offal.

Also, US southerners.

sdlroy Motsunabe is one of the GOAT Japanese food but I don’t often see it on here or talked about. I guess horumonyaki as well. Delicious foods.

Envelope_Torture +1 for motsunabe. Life changing.

Finishing it off with ramen/rice is something everyone should experience.

Envelope_Torture Motsunabe is the greatest thing ever. Motsu/horumon in general I feel like more people need to give a shot.

suboptimus_maximus Motsunabe. The real ones know.

WhyCanIChangeMyNamet Only the REAL ones know Kiritanpo Nabe.

Potential_Post_3020 「サバの塩焼き定食だな。

Express-Case6662 Along the same lines. Hamachi Kama. Just a simple piece of fish grilled to perfection. One of my favorites.

danielleiellle Fortunately I am finding more and more places in the NJ and NY area with this. Even Kura. So good.

zaichii All the grilled fish I had in Japan was so good! So underrated and looks so simple but the fact the fish stays so juicy despite being grilled not steamed is wow

Ilovewendyschili This! Not a fan of seafood in general, but I had this for the first time in Japan during my first visit, and it had become my favorite since. I’ve gone 3 times, going back early next year, and this is one dish I would never skip. Even the Yoshinoya set is so good.

username_obnoxious I learned that I love saba when I went to Japan.

TooManyDraculas Mackerel is an insanely good fish and think a lot of people, particularly in the US, aren't all that familiar with it.

Valar_Kinetics This and Sanma equivalent are absolutely the answer. It’s the meal that most represents Japan IMO.

CoolBev Gilled fish of the season - yum.

SubstantialListen921 I think a lot of American tourists don't really know how to enjoy tsukemono. Pickled vegetables are pretty simple in most of North America.

One of the meals that really stays with me from a recent trip to Kyoto was a really, really good kyo tsukemono tasting course. Just stellar.

EclipseoftheHart I am heavily considering making my own sake so I can make kasuzuke since sake lees are impossible to find where I live lol.

There is such a huge variety of tsukemono that even if you go to a higher end place in the USA you will only ever see a tiny fraction of varieties. I would absolutely LOVE to do a tsukemono tasting course. I’m going to have to write that down as an option if I ever make it to Japan!

SlackerDS5 I’ve grown up with some canning in the house. I loved the tsukemono when we had full meals (multiple courses). It was my first time including it for breakfast. Well, having a Japanese breakfast, period which I think is underrated as well.

SuccotashAsleep6459 I don’t think they are underrated though.

Tora-ge I think aji-fry could use a little more love

Living-Number-9050 Theres a restaurant in izu (shimoda) that serves freshly caught aji fry. Before eating, I thought that frying something so fresh was a waste as frying would just overpower it. But no, you could definitely taste the freshness. Is was the best aji fry of my life, by far.

Tora-ge I had a similar experience in Kamakura near Hase station. It was one of the best fish dishes I’d had on my trip!

Several_Bar_5257 Omg yes. I miss Japanese Chinese food so much.

gizmosvapor Honestly, I didn't even realized I missed these two things so much until this post.

Middle-Speaker4707 I love the Japanese haambagu (hamburger) and “steak” restaurants in Japan. The sauces are ketchup/tomato/Worcestershire based and they are typically served with rice. I don’t see a lot of coverage of this type of restaurant, but they’re common in Japan.

peptoldaddy Japanese Hamburg. The sauce, the rice and sizzling onions- ugh we have it all wrong in North America.

MakeSouthBayGR8Again It’s actually the Japanese version of Beef bourguignon.

BeardedGlass Had this yesterday, pork hayashi with lots of mushrooms. So yummy and creamy. It was lightly seasoned so I can just drink the stew lol

fakuryu I think its oden, I rarely seen tourists having some when I visited Fukuoka's Yatais and I rarely see western food vloggers showcasing it.

Square_Ad849 Oden is underrated, it gets a bad rap because it’s described as “fish cakes”. Well yeah they are, but there is more to it. Even the fish cake in Oden is not all fishy, the textures very from each one also. And the broth is just drinkable.

hukuuchi12 Oden has become really popular in East Asia, but it's not as well-known in the West.

sonoale What an humble yet profound dish. I love it.

Several_Bar_5257 Even the post drinks, late night oden from 7-11 hits the spot

Quick_Customer_6691 Agebitashi eggplant. Refreshing yet rich side dish. I like adding fresh chiles as well. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in a US restaurant.

[deleted] Good call.🤙😂
